The brisk Ohio fall cold weather with leftover rain showers didn't stop approximately 100 people from attending the 445th Airlift Wing's 16th Annual Chili Cook-off Oct. 27, 2016 held in Bldg. 4026. The event raised $400 for the Combined Federal Campaign.

This year’s chili cook-off featured 17 simmering pots of chili with names such as, "Dave’s Dynamo Draino,” “Beans in Purgatory,” “Beef and Barley Chili” and “Lager and Bacon Chili."

Judging the competition this year were Col. Adam Willis, 445 AW commander, his wife, Elyse, Col. Craig McPike, 445th Operations Group commander, Chief Master Sgts. James Felton, 445 AW command chief and Mark Lockhart, 445th Maintenance Group superintendent, and Senior Master Sgt. Timothy Emberton, 445th Force Support Squadron chief of education and training.   The judges sampled each pot of chili, basing their overall score on five categories; color, aroma, texture, flavor and heat.

Once the judges set their spoons down and sipped more water after tasting some heated concoctions, a winner was selected, Master Sgt. Gregory King, 445th Maintenance Squadron HSC section chief, and his pot of chili “Southeastern Ohio Inspired Chili.”

“Everything in the chili is home grown except for the beans, paprika and cumin. I grew the peppers and jalapeños, I caught the venison, I even made my own chili powder,” King said.

The aroma of spices, peppers and various secret ingredients wafting from the various crock pots continued to linger in the air even after the last tasty morsel was devoured at the conclusion of the event.
