FALLS CHURCH, Va. --  Seventy one years ago today, the U.S. Air Force became an independent service, creating a new breed of warriors to own and protect the skies. Ever since, Airmen have protected America from air, space and cyberspace aggression. The creation of the U.S. Air Force in 1947 shaped airpower into what it is today…agile, resilient and lethal. There is no doubt we are the greatest Air Force in the world.

The birth of the Air Force brought a strategic perspective and use of airpower. Aircraft were no longer restricted to the tactical level of battlefield warfare. Airmen possess a unique air-mindedness focused on using the sky’s advantages to disrupt enemy plans, attack centers of gravity, and protect friendly forces on the ground.

I am honored and humbled to serve with today’s Warrior Medics, who have that same air-mindedness and who deliver Trusted Care anytime, anywhere. Our world class en route patient care continuum transports ill and injured service members from points of injury to medical treatment facilities around the world. This is a testament to the power of our U.S. Air Force and our relentless pursuit to save lives. Since 2001, Airmen have transported more than 114,000 wounded service members, delivering care like never before in the history of warfare.

Our Warrior Medics have never rested on yesterday’s achievements. Innovation is in our DNA. Every day, medics are researching new ways of treating patients, adapting medical technology to the aerial environment, and protecting lives even before an injury occurs. Some advancements, like wearable medical technology, used to be science fiction, but are becoming a reality thanks to medical Airmen.

In my short time as the Air Force Surgeon General, I have been inspired by each Airman I have met. Every Airman offers a unique contribution to national security, and they do so with a true service-before-self attitude. They serve far forward on the battlefield, on the ground and in the air, providing lifesaving care to ensure our wounded warriors make it home. Our history gives us a lot to be proud of, but I am most proud of today’s Warrior Medics who put their lives on the line to save others and defend our nation.
