Wing remembers first Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force
WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio – The 445th Airlift Wing held an afternoon ceremony May 28 by lowering the American flag from half staff to honor and remember the late first Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force, Paul W. Airey. Chief Master Sgt. Aaron Mouser, maintenance group, and Master Sgt. Mark Lyle, honor guard program manager fold the flag as a group of wing reservists stand at attention. Chief Master Sgt. Airey and his wife Shirley's remains were buried together at Arlington National Cemetery, Va., May 28. Chief Airey, serving 27 years, became the first Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force April 3, 1967. Chief Master Sgt. Airey retired from active duty on Aug. 1, 1970 and died March 11 in Panama City, Fla. (Air Force photo/Laura Darden)
