Small fire on parked C-5 Galaxy aircraft

A parked C-5 Galaxy operated by the 445th Airlift Wing here experienced a small electrical fire during a routine operational auxiliary power unit check Friday, March 27 at about 2:08 p.m.

The fire was immediately extinguished by trained maintenance personnel using a portable hand-held fire extinguisher.

Base emergency responders quickly responded to the scene. Six maintenance personnel performing maintenance duties were uninjured and safely evacuated.

The C-5 is currently classified as "impounded", which means only essential 445th personnel are permitted near the plane. The plane is currently not flyable. It will be returned to flying status as soon as inspections and repairs are completed.

No estimates have been made yet on the extent of the damage or the cost to repair, according to Colonel Anna Schulte, 445th Maintenance Group commander.
