Eighteen members of the 445th Airlift Wing Security Forces Squadron left Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio for Southwest Asia Dec. 20, and 13 more departed Jan 23. The reservists will be deployed for six months in support of ongoing security operations.

While deployed, security forces members will perform duties including mobile patrol, quick reaction teams, tower guards, convoy and entry control point security (physical searches, credential checks and escort coordination), said Master Sgt. Walter Bennett, SFS security manager.

Although the first group left just days before Christmas, they were enthusiastic and eager to deploy.

"I've been waiting a while for this," said Senior Airman William Bowden. "I'm glad I finally get the opportunity to deploy and make a difference."

Airmen Bowden will deploy as a M240 machine gunner. He will serve as a member of the mobile quick reaction force and respond to any alarms on the Tactical Automated System or suspicious activity. He may also be called upon to provide escort on and off base for convoy security.

As Tech. Sgt. Khristopher Powell packed his mobility bag, he said, "I feel proud to serve and do mypart. I'm humbled by this and just want to make a difference." Sergeant Powell has been deployed four times since Sept 11, 2001.

Family members also voiced their support of the deployment.

Michelle Grice, wife of Master Sgt. John Grice, and a former Air Force member and Army brat stated, "I totally support his deployment. I understand the entire deployment process. He'll be fine because he knows his job. He'll be alright."

The Grices are expecting a new baby while Sergeant Grice is deployed. Mrs. Grice says she'll be a little sad that he won't be there for the birth, but she has an awesome support system in place.

Sergeant Grice will serve as a sector flight sergeant during the deployment. He will direct supervision of all mobile patrols, quick reaction teams, tower guards, and entry control points in his sector on his 14 hour shift, explained Master Sgt. Bennett.

Another security forces member, Senior Airman Bradley Scheidt, has been in the Air Force for three years. This is his first deployment. He was joined at the send-off by his wife Danicia, mother Lisa, father Tim and grandfather Tom. Airman Scheidt's father and grandfather both served in the Air Force.

"I'm glad he gets the opportunity to serve his country. I'm very proud of him and will miss him," said wife Danicia. He's doing what he's always wanted to do, added his mother.
Numerous family members were on hand for the send-off. The families were joined by Col. Stephen Goeman, 445th Airlift Wing commander, and Chief Master Sgt. Aaron Mouser, command chief.

"I'm extremely proud of our men and women, and their families. Each day they make sacrifices in service to our country. Thanks for volunteering and your willingness to serve. Be reassured that the 445th will take care of your families while you're deployed," said Colonel Goeman.
