445th Airman is WPAFB Honor Guard Member of the Year

WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio --  Staff Sgt. Brandon Spence, 445th Civil Engineer Squadron structures apprentice, has been selected as the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Honor Guard Member of the Year. The announcement was made March 7 during the 2013 Team Wright-Patterson awards banquet held at the Wright-Patt Club.

The Wright Patt Honor Guard services one of the largest areas of responsibility in the Department of Defense--210,000 square miles, covering six states with 107 members.

During the award period, Spence served as flight sergeant, assuming the supervisory role for three active-duty ceremonial Airmen and two flight leaders. He participated in 235 honor guard events--206 funerals and 29 color details. He led 69 ceremonies, directing members to perform every detail exceptionally. He coordinated five dignified transfer teams and he also performed 11 double duties, easing manpower issues. Altogether, Spence recorded 1,033 hours on the road, traveling more than 37,000 miles to perform honor guard duties.

Spence is 100 percent qualified to fill all honor guard positions. He conducted training for all 107 new honor guard members, reducing any errors performed by 95 percent. He received more than 42 letters thanking him for his honorable service and participation.
