HILL AIR FORCE BASE – For many of us, the most dangerous activity we participate in each day is driving. Nobody wants or expects to be in an accident. Unfortunately, the numbers are not on your side. Let’s look at a few.
- The average person will likely crash his or her car 3-4 times in a lifetime.
- Over 50% of car accidents happen within five miles of your home.
- If you talk on the phone while driving, you increase your chances of getting into a car accident by 400%.
- On average, 1 pedestrian dies from a car crash every 88 minutes in the U.S.
Our FY23 monthly vehicle mishap trend clearly shows winter months present the most danger to drivers.
Take some steps to prepare for driving this winter.
- Do a preseason check of your vehicle including washer fluid, tires, lights and wiper blades.
- Pack an emergency kit for your car with food, water, first aid kit, phone charger, blankets and a shovel.
- Give yourself extra time to travel. Always clear snow from your windows and mirrors.
Even after you prepare and do everything to avoid a vehicle accident you may still be in one. Ensure you know the proper actions to take if you are involved in a POV or GOV mishap.
