COLONEL JAY M. SMELTZER

Colonel Jay M. Smeltzer is the Commander of the 445th Maintenance Group, 445th Airlift Wing, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. As the senior maintenance officer, he is responsible for directing maintenance for the training and readiness of approximately 400 assigned group personnel tasked with maintaining an inventory of nine C-17A Globemaster III aircraft valued at $1.7 billion.          

 

Colonel Smeltzer was born and raised in Columbus, Ohio and graduated from Thomas Worthington High School in 1977. He delayed enlisted in the Air Force in 1976 and entered Basic Military Training in 1977. Colonel Smeltzer attended aircraft mechanic training at Sheppard AFB, Texas. He served as NCOIC of Maintenance Control, 907th Tactical Airlift Group, to include a deployment SWA in support of Desert Storm. 

 

Colonel Smeltzer graduated from The Ohio State University in 1992 and received his commission in 1994.  Since then, he has been a maintenance officer for C-141, C-130 and C-5 maintenance units and commanded C-5 and C-130 maintenance squadrons. In addition, he served as the Deputy Group Commander, 433d Maintenance Group, 433d Airlift Wing, Lackland AFB, Texas, Commander, 445th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio and Deputy Group Commander, 445th Maintenance Group.
